Dispelling the Myth of Using Comment Tags in SEO
(Page 1 of 4 )
Are comment tags still effective in SEO? In short: no. Comment tags today can be paralleled to the use of the keyword tag; they are no longer as effective as they once were. Given the changing nature of SEO, it's no surprise that what once was fact is now myth. Like some myths, they all started with some truth, and truth became legend, and legend became myth. It's time to dispel the
Myth of Comment Tags.To explain why comment tags are no longer effective, it's necessary to define what they tags are and why they were originally used.
First, what does a comment tag look like' According to the
W3C<!-- this is a comment -->
<!-- and so is this one,
which occupies more than one line -->
You will notice that a comment tag is basically a left arrow, an exclamation point, two hyphens, a space, and then text, like this:
<!-- place comments here. It closes after the text with a space, two more hyphens and a right arrow. -->
Comments are treated as markup only as defined by the Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) and have no special meaning in search engines. They are invisible to the user, and can only be seen in the code itself. They are for the use of designers and programmers to make comments and remarks in the HTML for later navigation or to note what is not obvious in the context of the page.
